About
About Writer Profits
I started freelance writing more than 15 years ago. Over the years, I wrote features for magazines, copy for corporations, website content, operations manuals for franchises, training manuals for trainers, countless newsletters for businesses and independents — and a stream of diverse, varied, and sometimes quirky writing projects for a diverse, varied, and sometimes quirky clientele. Add to that list three years as editor-in-chief for a trade publication, ghostwriter of several business books for other authors, and author of about a dozen books and home study courses of my own.
In that time, I’ve watched the demand for writers go up. Large companies always invested in highly-polished brochures, advertisements and other collateral materials. However, with cost-saving technological improvements for print production, and the widespread use of the Internet, smaller businesses and independent professionals realized they could compete for market share on what proved to be a more level playing field.
Suddenly, “content was king” and writers were employed to help satiate the growing thirst for it. As work for offline projects continued to increase, the real estate of the World Wide Web was being populated with layers upon layers of information. More recently, blogging and social networking were thrown into the mix and, now, the landscape of a business can be shaped by well-crafted words—and lots of them.
Employment ads for writers are abundant in today’s job market. Yet, despite this demand, a writer’s talent is often devalued. It’s commonplace to see a payment structure of $10 per article and $300 for ghostwriting a book. How can you build a sustainable career on that?!
We can complain, rant, rave and scold the job poster but that won’t change anything. The only way to successfully transform those paltry pay scales into profound profits is to change what we do to find and attract lucrative writing assignments, jobs and projects. That’s why I started Writer Profits.
