Attract Writing Assignments with a Blog
Posted by Susan CarterJan 23
Many writers don’t have websites. Although I think every writer needs one, I get it. It takes time and some skills that you might not possess to create one. While you’re working up the nerve (and/or cash) to create an online presence with your own website, blogs are a great way to showcase your talent AND attract client work.
Here is a quick three-step plan to use a blog to win writing assignments:
1. Stick to one topic.
The key is to have a blog (or several blogs) that speak to the markets you want to write for. Love animals? Start a pet blog – give pet owners useful information, tips and strategies for making their beloved pets happy and healthy. Are you a boating enthusiast? Blog about boating, give safety information, and review must-have boating accessories. Pick a topic you are enthusiastic about and commit the time to maintain a blog about it.
2. Make contact and an invitation.
Identify organizations that fit your topic. It’s easiest to start local so your contact list is manageable and you can add a personal touch. For example, animal lovers can contact veterinarians, pet stores, pet food outlets and other pet-related markets to let them know you specialize in writing for their industry. For the boat enthusiast, boat dealers, associations and clubs would be ideal contacts. Whatever your blog topic is, identify potential clients and contact them. Invite them to view your “portfolio” of work—yep, you guessed it: your blog. You can do this by cold calling, dropping off a simple business card that gives the URL to your blog, sending an invitational email with a link to your blog, or networking at events and handing out cards.
3. Connect the dots.
Don’t assume that if you invite people to view your blog, they understand that you are an available freelance writer for assignments. Connect the dots. Tell them you’d love to have their business. Wait a reasonable amount of time – a week or so – and follow up to ask if they’ve had a chance to view your work. And don’t forget to mention the “perk” of being able to give them a shout out on your blog if you do work together. That’s added value that clients understand.
Reality Check! Rarely do assignments come from simply having an online presence. YOU are a key ingredient for attracting clients and creating the ultimate success of your business.

Great advice for at least starting a blog to get some online presence. What about adding a simple tab at the top of the blog, stating “Need a Writer?” or “Hire Me” on the blog.
